Intertek’s laboratory has been approved by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), giving it the enhanced experience and credentials to assist local and international businesses in ensuring that their products and packaging comply with the rigorous testing regime for compostable standards.

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is North America’s leading compostable product and packaging certification provider. The BPI Certification Mark denotes third-party compostability verification for manufacturers and brand owners to use on their products and packaging and for consumers, end-users, and composters to use when determining whether (the waste from) a product or packaging is compostable.

In addition to the BPI testing and certification services, Intertek provides a variety of testing services for biodegradable materials in accordance with a variety of product standards and assessment standards in numerous countries and regions (e.g., ISO 17088, ASTM D6400, ASTM D6868, EN 14995, EN 13432, AS 4736, AS 5810, GB/T 41010…) and under various environmental conditions.

Intertek’s laboratory has recently developed an ASTM D6691 capability for the biodegradation of plastic materials in marine environments. The standard applies to plastic materials that have been exposed to either a pre-grown population of at least ten aerobic marine microorganisms of known genera or an indigenous population found in natural seawater. The test method is applicable to all polymer materials containing at least 20% carbon that are not inhibitory to marine microorganisms. This test method may be applied to materials other than plastics.
