Effective June 19, 2015, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has listed ethylene glycol (CAS No. 107-21-1) on the Proposition 65 list as a chemical known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity via ingestion.
With this listing, a warning label will be required for all products that expose Californians to ethylene glycol. Proposition 65 also prohibits the discharge or release of listed substances to sources of drinking water.
Companies have a year from the listing date to comply with the warning label requirements or remove ethylene glycol from their products.
Ethylene glycol is used primarily in the production of polyester compounds, mainly in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester fibres and films. It can also be found in surface coatings, antifreeze and de-icing fluid, and surfactants and emulsifiers.
