Scope

This document is intended to assess the potential CO2; rebreathing hazard of products that an infant might sleep on or against. Included are traditional infant mattresses, but also other infant products or components thereof. Furthermore, the device and test methodology used in this document can be adapted to assess the potential CO2, rebreathing hazard of products intended for disabled or older users.

Principle 

A “breathing” machine is configured to simulate breathing in a 2- to 6-month-old infant, The machine inhales and exhales through a weighted hemispherical face probe that simulates the face of an infant. Carbon dioxide gas is metered into an artificial lung at a rate that simulates normal infant metabolism when breathing freely. The alternating transfer of gases in and out of the probe is intended to simulate the inhale and exhale actions of an infant when breathing unencumbered. This baseline measurement expected to have a concentration of 3.75 to 4.00 % by volume.

The probe is then lowered onto the sleep-related surface to simulate an infant who has turned face down. The concentration of CO2 in the artificial lung is measured and recorded after it reaches a steady value. This concentration is then compared toa pass/fail threshold value of 9.0% by volume. CO2 concentrations less than or equal to 9.0 % by volume are defined as a pass.

Apparatus

• The apparatus shall include a spherical or hemispherical face probe made of a rigid material with a smooth surface and a diameter of 76mm ± 1 mm.
• The apparatus shall also include a “breathing” machine configured to simulate the respiration of a 2- to 6- month-old infant.
