On Dec 1, 2023, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved a revised version of ASTM F3084 and published ASTM F3084-23 in January 2024.
This ASTM standard covers performance requirements and test methods of rockers. It also provides requirements for labeling and instructional literature to promote safe use of the rockers by an occupant and a caregiver.
This ASTM standard revised definitions 3.1.6, 3.1.7 and 3.1.7.1, specifically states the scope of application of this standard, adding the maximum weight of the occupant. Infant/Toddler rockers can be used without a restraint system for independent rocking by child that can climb in and out of the product unassisted. This specification does not cover rockers intended for toddler only use without a restraint system, hand-held infant carriers, or sleep products that have the ability to rock or have a rocking mode.
Significant changes to the standard from ASTM F3084-22 to ASTM F3084–23 are described below.
Compared with the previous version, ASTM F3084-23 provides a more flexible treatment for restraint system, which can be stored, but cannot be detached. This revision is a recommendation rather than a mandatory requirement. If manufacturer does not recommend a means of storage for the restraint system, the corresponding added warning of that may be omitted.
