European Union Published New Version Standard for Reclined cradles
On March 8, 2023, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) issued a new version of standard EN 12790-1:2023 and EN 12790-2:2023 for reclined cradles to replace the old version EN 12790:2009. All national standards conflicting with that shall be repealed not later than March 31, 2024.
EN 12790 has been divided into the following two different parts to widen the scope of the standard:
- EN 12790-1, that covers reclined cradles intended for children up to when they start to try to sit up (same as EN 12790:2009); and
- EN 12790-2, that covers reclined cradles intended for children up to when they start to stand up, not covered in EN 12790:2009
In comparison with EN 12790:2009, the significant technical changes relate to the following topic for EN 12790-1:

- Section 5 newly add General requirements and test conditions
- Section 6 newly add Chemical hazards
- Section 7 newly add Thermal hazards
- Clause 8.1 newly add General requirements for mechanical hazards
- Clause 8.2 newly add Hazards due to sound level
- Clause 8.3 revise Entrapment hazards
- Clause 8.4 revise requirements for Hazards due to moving parts
- Clause 8.5.2 revise requirements and test methods for restraint system
- Clause 8.5.3 revise requirements and test methods for carrying handle
- Clause 8.6 revise hazards due to folding of the product
- Clause 8.7 newly add Entanglement hazards
- Clause 8.9 newly add Suffocation hazards from plastic packaging
- Clause 8.11.2 newly adds Dynamic strength
- Clause 8.11.4 newly adds requirements and test method for powered mechanisms
- Clause 8.11.5 revise durability of reclined cradles with carrying handle
- Clause 8.11.7 newly adds requirements and test method for toy bar attachment
- Clause 8.14 newly add Electric hazards
- Section 9 general update of product information clause with the introduction of symbols following CEN/TR 13387-5
- Introduction of an Annex giving relevant translations for warning sentences.
In addition, this new European standard EN 12790-2 newly add Forward stability in clause 6.1 and revise Product information in clause 7.
There is an important reminder that EN 12790-2:2023 is read in conjunction with and in addition to the European standard EN 12790-1:2023 and it cannot be used separately.
