On Jan 01, 2023, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved a revised version of ASTM F2906 and published ASTM F2906-23 in January 2023.
This ASTM standard for bedside sleepers attempts to minimize the hazards associated with these products from the following: (1) occupant retention, (2) structural integrity and product assembly, and (3) deficiency of consumer education regarding product use.
This ASTM standard for bedside sleepers includes testing methods, warning label requirements, guidance literature, and several performance requirements designed to reduce or prevent child injury and death to promote safe use of bedside sleepers.
This ASTM standard for bedside sleepers covers products intended to provide sleeping space for an infant up to approximately 5 months of age (or when child begins to push up on hands and knees). These products are intended to be secured to the side of an adult bed for the purpose of having a baby sleep in close proximity to an adult.
This ASTM standard for bedside sleepers revised Clause 5.6 only, specifically states that the bedside sleeper rail that is adjacent to the adult bed shall be at or below the acceptable adult bed height range specified in the manufacturer’s instructions except for any portion of the rail that is 7.5 in. or higher when measured according to the side height requirement found in Consumer Safety Specification F2194. Compared with the previous version of this clause on the rail height requirements, the new version widened the scope of the test. It is no longer limited to the lower part of the side rails near the adult bed, but there are stricter height requirements for all rails in the bedside sleepers.
