EU Publishes Toy Safety Standard EN 71 Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements Amendment

On June 2018, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published an amended version of European standard EN

71-3:2013+A3:2018, Safety of toys - Part 3: Migration of certain elements.

The amendments are primarily related to lead limit and are highlighted as below:

  • Category I toy materials,migration lead limit changed from 13.5 mg/kg to 2.0 mg/kg
  • Category II toy materials,migration lead limit changed from 3.4 mg/kg to 0.5 mg/kg
  • Category III toy materials,migration lead limit changed from 160 mg/kg to 23 mg/kg

EN 71-3:2013+A3:2018 will be given the status of a national standard and the conflicting national standards will be withdrawn by Dec 2018 at the latest. This standard is expected to be harmonized under the Toys Safety Directive 2009/48/EC when accepted by the European Commission (EC) and published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
