US Rhode Island Restricts Organohalogen Flame Retardant in Upholstered Furniture or Bedding
The US State of Rhode Island has passed a bill H5082 (S 166, An Act relating to Health and Safety – Child Products and Upholstered Furniture) to restrict organohalogen flame retardants and to amend the Chapter 23-26 of the General Laws entitled "Bedding and Upholstered Furniture" and the Chapter 23-75 of the General Laws in entitled "Children’s Product Safety Act". The act shall be effective on 1 July 2019.
According to the act, beginning from 1 July 2019, no manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer shall manufacture, knowingly sell, offer for sale, or distribute for use in this state any residential upholstered bedding or furniture, which contains ≥ 100 ppm of any organohalogen flame retardant chemical. This class includes any chemical containing the element bromine or chlorine bonded to carbon that is added to a plastic, foam, or textile.
Beside, a manufacturer of the banned products shall notify persons of entities that sell the manufactured products in the State of Rhode Island about the provisions no less than 90 days prior to the effective date of the ban.
