US Maine Adopts Rules Requiring Reporting for Formaldehyde in Certain Children’s Products

The US State of Maine has published the final rule on designating formaldehyde as priority chemicals under the Toxic Chemicals in Children’s Products Law (Chapter 885). The rule is enforced with immediate effect.

The approved rule adopts the propose details, and also emphasizes the children’s products to be reported shall be intended for use by children under the age of 12. According to the news posted on the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s website, the reporting deadline of this new rule is 18 Dec. 2015 which is same as that for four phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP and DEP, designated in Chapter 888). 

The seven priority chemicals as below:

  • Bisphenol A (BPA)
  • Nonylphenol/Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NP/NPEO)
  • Cadmium 
  • Mercury
  • Arsenic
  • Phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, and DEP) 
  • Formaldehyde
