On 21 November 2025, the European Commission proposed a regulation to add a new entry to Part A of Annex I to the EU POPs Regulation (EU) 2019/1021, which restricts chlorpyrifos (CAS No. 2921-88-2) in substances, mixtures and articles to be placed on the EU market. The amendment is scheduled to enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). The amendment is scheduled to be adopted in the first quarter of 2026.
Requirement
The chlorpyrifos content limit in substances, mixtures and articles is 0.01 mg/kg (0.000001%).
Usage
Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide, acaricide, and miticide used primarily to control foliage and soil-borne insect pests. Chlorpyrifos is highly toxic, and there is strong evidence in humans that prenatal exposure causes adverse effects on neurodevelopment, and that there is no safe dose of exposure. In May 2025, the substance was listed in Annex A to the UN Stockholm Convention, and it was decided that the production and use of the substance shall be eliminated globally.
