On Dec 1, 2025, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved a revised version of ASTM F1235 and published ASTM F1235-25 in December 2025.
This specification is intended to minimize injuries to children resulting from normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of chairs.
For the purposes of this specification a chair is:
- A seat made for the express purpose of seating and holding a child who can remain in a sitting position due to his or her own coordination.
- Usually a legless seat constructed to locate the occupant at a table in such a position and elevation so that the surface of the table can be used as the feeding surface for the occupant.
- Supported solely by the table on which it is mounted. These chairs are intended for use by children between the ages of six months and three years and who weigh no more than 37 lb (16.8 kg).
Compared to the previous version, the most significant change in ASTM F1235-25 is the addition of requirements and testing methods for Battery Compartments, as well as the optimization of definitions, title Permanency of Labels and Warnings, and Marking and Labeling and Instructional Literature.
Significant changes to the standard from ASTM F1235-18 to ASTM F1235-25 are described below.
- Update the spelling and part of speech of the names defined in Clause 3; add Clause 3.1.8 "protective component";
- Update the titles of Clause 5.9 and its corresponding test method 7.11 to "Permanency of Labels and Warnings";
- Update the requirements of Clause 5.10 for Protective Components, and add an explanation that all protective components that are accessible to a child in the product or accessible to a child from any position around the product shall be evaluated;
- Add Clause 6.8 "Battery Compartments (remote control devices are exempt from these requirements)" and its corresponding test method 7.14;
- Update the content and format of Clause 8 Marking and Labeling and Clause 9 Instructional Literature.
