On 11 June 2025, the new European Standard EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025 on toy flammability safety is published. This European standard specifies the categories of flammable materials which are prohibited in all toys, and requirements concerning flammability of certain toys when they are subjected to a small source of ignition. In the new standard, the testing methods have been further refined and the requirements for water hardness have been expanded. The standard will be given the status of a CEN national standard by December 2025 and the conflicting national standards will be withdrawn by June 2026 at the latest. |

On 11 June 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published an amended version of the European Standard EN 71-2: EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025, Safety of toys - Part 2: Flammability.
This revised version includes some new definitions:
- 3.3 Cosmetic kit
- 3.10 Gustative game
- 3.15 Olfactory board game

The new standard EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025 will be given the status of a national standard by December 2025 and the conflicting national standards will be withdrawn by June 2026 at the latest. The standard is expected to become a harmonised standard under the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC after it is accepted by the European Commission and is published on the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
