Main content or requirements On 27 September 2024, the European Commission amended the hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) content limit in the POPs Regulation (EU) 2019/1021. The content limit in substances, mixtures and articles is reduced from 100 mg/kg (0.01%) to 75 mg/kg (0.0075%), from 17 October 2024.

On 27 September 2024, the European Commission approved and published Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/2555 to amend Annex I to Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 as regards the entry of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). It shall enter into force on 17 October 2024.

Highlights of the update:

  1. The content limit for HBCDD in substances, mixtures and articles is reduced from 100 mg/kg (0.01%) to 75 mg/kg (0.0075%).
  2. For the use of recycled polystyrene in the production of EPS (expanded polystyrene) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) insulation material for use in buildings or civil engineering works, the HBCDD content limit value remains unchanged at 100 mg/kg (0.01%).
