On 27 October 2023, Standards Australia published an amendment to the toy standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2021 (identical to ISO 8124-3:2020) on migration of certain elements, to be AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2021+Amd 1:2023 (identical to ISO 8124-3:2020+Amd.1:2023). The amendment shall be effective immediately.
Compared to the previous version, AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2021+Amd 1:2023 includes following major changes:
- For modelling clay:
(1) Added migration limit for boron (B) (3750 mg/kg); (2) Changed migration limit for barium (Ba) from 250 mg/kg to 350 mg/kg.
- For putty:
(1) Added migration limit for boron (B) (3750 mg/kg); (2) Lowered migration limit for four elements (Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg) to be those for modelling clay.
- For slime:
(1) Added migration limit for boron (B) (1250 mg/kg); (2) Lowered migration limits for eight elements (Sb, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Se) to be those for finger paint.
As a result, migration limits for elements are as below:
Maximum acceptable element migration from toy materials (AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2021+Amd 1:2023)

Modelling clay and putty are defined as flexible solid or semi-solid mixtures that retain their shape and form when moulded into a shape, intended to create representations of objects by hand manipulation or to be extruded into profiles by the toy. Slime is defined as water-based gel or gel like material, clear or coloured, which is viscous, slippery, and often non-Newtonian fluids, intended for play by hand manipulation, kneading and stretching.
