ASTM Published Latest Safety Standard for Expansion Gates and Expandable Enclosures ASTM F1004-23

On Jan 01, 2023, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved a revised version of ASTM F1004 and published ASTM F1004-23 in January 2023.

This ASTM standard for expansion gates and expandable enclosures include performance requirements, test methods, and marking requirements to promote safe use of expansion gates and expandable enclosures.

This ASTM standard for expansion gates and expandable enclosures are intended for young children aged six months through 24 months, expansion gates are intended to be erected in an opening, such as a doorway, to prevent the passage of young children, but which can be removed by adult who are able to operate the locking mechanism; expandable enclosures are intended to completely surround an area or play-space by self-supporting barrier which a young child may be confined.

Expansion gates generally are used indoors, but expandable enclosures are used indoors or outdoors, or both.

The revision of this standard does not involve changes in physical structure, test methods and performance requirement, only optimizes the partial clause of marking and labeling. The specific change is as follows: Added note 12 in clause 8.5.7.1, indicating the warning statement “You MUST install [wall cups] to keep gate in place. Without [wall cups], child can push out and escape.” need to be set separately from other warning statement only on the product, which is not required to be separate on the packaging and the instructions.
