On Nov 23, 2022, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved a revised version of ASTM F406 and published ASTM F406-22 in November 2022.
This ASTM standard establishes testing requirements for structural integrity and performance requirements for non-full-size cribs/play yards, both rigid sided and mesh/fabric assemblies. It also provides requirements for labeling and instructional material.
This ASTM standard covers a framed enclosure with a floor made for the purpose of providing sleeping or playing accommodations, or both, for a child who cannot climb out and is less than 35 in. (890 mm) in height. It also covers bassinet, changing table, or similar accessories to a non-full size crib/play yard.
This specification does not cover inflatable products.
Significant changes to the standard from ASTM F406–19 to ASTM F406–22 are described below.
- Delete the definition of clause 3.1: accessory;
- Add the definition of 3.1.23: play yard/non-full size crib dependent accessory, 3.1.23.1: full accessories, 3.1.23.2: full bassinet accessories, 3.1.23.3: bassinet dependent accessories;
- Revise clause 5.13: Straps /Straps requirements and the corresponding test method in clause 8.24, the requirements are divided into 5.13.1 Cords/Straps Free Length and 5.13.2 Cords/Straps That Can Form Loops. The test method also corresponds to the breakdown clause;
- Revise the description of requirements in clause 5.15: Entrapment in Accessories, corresponding to the updated definition in clause 3.1.23;
- Revise the requirements in clause 5.16: Mattress, dividing mattress into up to 1.5 in. thick and over 1.5 in. thick according to the thickness and requirements respectively;
- Add the test method of clause 8.32: Mattress Gap Measurement.
