Subject: Canada – Approved Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations
Canada has approved the Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations. Here’s the highlight for some major differences between it and its proposal:
Checkout bag:
- will break or tear if washed in accordance with the washing procedures specified for a single domestic wash in the International Organization for Standardization standard ISO 6330, entitled Textiles — Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing, as amended from time to time.
Cutlery or straw:
- contains polystyrene or polyethylene; or;
- changes its physical properties after being run through an electrically operated household dishwasher 100 times.
Exceptions for plastic straws:
A retail store may sell a single-use plastic flexible straw to a customer if the straw is packaged together with a beverage container and the packaging was done at a location other than the retail store. However, it will be prohibited from 20th Jun, 2024.
Effective dates:
- From 20th June, 2023, a person must not manufacture or import single use plastic ring carriers, and from 20th June, 2024, a person must not sell single-use plastic ring carriers
- From 20th Dec, 2023, a person must not sell single-use plastic straws, plastic checkout bags, single-use plastic cutlery, single-use plastic foodservice ware or single-use plastic stir sticks.
- From 20th Dec, 2025, Single-Use Plastics that are manufactured, imported or sold for the purpose of export will be prohibited
- The rest will become effective 20th Dec, 2022
