Leather

Intertek offers full set of testing services for leather, leather goods.

Our extensive range of testing equipment ensures that clients can have products fully evaluated before bulk production commences and at all stages during manufacture, thus ensuring the right quality is supplied to the customer resulting in fewer returns and increasing customer satisfaction and customer loyalty.

1)  Handbags & Small Luggage Items

The strength of straps and strap fastenings is an important consideration in the quality assessment of handbags and luggage. Intertek is able to carry out all strength tests, using state-of-the-art equipment, to assess the risk of strap failure whether at fastenings (e.g. buckles) or ｗｈｅｒｅ the strap is attached to the body of the item.

In addition a full range of color fastness tests, water spotting tests etc. can be performed, particularly on handbags to assess the risk of color transfer to clothing and possible blistering of leather finishes when exposed to water ｄｒｏｐlets.

2)  Belts

From an assessment of the components of a belt for labeling purposes, color fastness (wet and dry rub fastness, water fastness, etc.) to tarnishing of buckles and metal components, Intertek can test to clients’ requirements to ensure the products are "fit for purpose". Regular testing of items will ensure maintenance of product quality and reduce the risk of customer complaints.

3)  Leather Clothing

The relative high value of leather garments means that particular attention should be paid to their performance as they are often the subject of customer returns. Tests such as dry cleaning fastness, light fastness, finish adhesion and Veslic rubbing can be carried out on finished garments or materials and components prior to manufacture. The components such as zips, lining, interlinings and buttons should also be assessed for performance. A cleansing assessment on the whole garment may also be a consideration.

4)  Small Leather Goods (Purse, Wallets, etc.) 

Tests such as attachment strength of gilt corner pieces, clasp attachment, seam strength and abrasion resistance of linings, flexing resistance of outers, etc., can all be carried out on small leather goods items. Additionally, Intertek staff are able to give technical advice/assistance to clients on specific items.

5)  Leather & Artificial Leather For Automotive

Automotive leather as an important part of the automotive interior, is becoming increasingly diverse and upscale with the development of the automotive industry. The safety, service life and environmental protection performance of automotive leather are also highly concerned by consumers. Intertek can conduct testing based on domestic and foreign testing requirements, including the color fastness, abrasion properties, mechanical properties, flammability, water vapour permeability, thermal insulation, cold resistance and other characteristics of the performance testing and evaluation.

6)  Chemical testing in the leather products

Chromium (VI), certain Azo colorants, formaldehyde pentachlorophenol and VOCs are harmful substances with may be found in leather. Intertek possesses high technology analytical equipment to determine low levels of these chemicals, which can cause problems to consumers and/or pollute the environment.

Intertek footwear lab has been recognized by China National Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), and got the certificate China Metrology Accreditation (CMA).

CNAS has cooperation with at least 14 international economic organizations or standard organizations, and signed the mutual recognition agreement with International Accreditation Forum (IAF), Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (PAC), International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC), so it can be recognized in a global context.
