Intertek’s Chemical Smart Screening offers Early Detection of Hazardous Chemicals

As the apparel and footwear industry works to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals in both products and the supply chain, the need for proactive chemical management strategies has increased.
To meet industry demand, Intertek developed Chemical Smart Screening, a proactive and cost-effective approach to identify and prevent the use of harmful chemicals at the beginning of the textile, apparel and footwear manufacturing process.
Intertek’s Chemical Smart Screening tool is designed for use by textiles, apparel and footwear brands and manufacturers to detect the presence of common restricted substances – like flame retardants, disperse dyes, phthalates, APEOs, PAHs and PFCs – in raw materials during the early stages of manufacturing. Requiring only a single sample, Chemical Smart Screening detects 400 commonly found hazardous substances outlined in major chemical regulations including Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), and U.S. state chemical regulations like California’s Proposition 65 and CPSIA, as well as chemicals that are often included on companies’ own restricted substances lists (RSL).
