ASTM Publishes F2088-12a Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Swings
The ASTM F2088 – 12a Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Swings is a recently revised safety specification published by ASTM International to address safety concerns identified with the popular juvenile products known as infant swings. These products are defined in the standard as: “[A] stationary unit with a frame and powered mechanism that enables an infant to swing in a seated position. An infant swing is intended for use with infants from birth until a child is able to sit up unassisted.”
The Challenge:
The updated standard introduces several new requirements for infant swings, and also revises existing requirements that were introduced in previous editions of the standard. Key changes found in this revised standard include:
☆ More specific language regarding the testing of AC adapters, requiring them to be tested by against the “appropriate current national safety standard for AC adapters” by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL)
☆ ?Introduction of new requirements for swings with removable trays/armbars and swings without trays/armbars, including:
- A requirement that infant swings seat back and seat bottom angle be less than 60° if
full size, or 45° if travel size, or that infant swings feature shoulder straps as part of
the restraint system
- A requirement for swings with non-horizontal axis of swing feature a seat bottom to
horizontal angle of 5° or greater, or that the infant swing feature shoulder straps as
part of the restraint system
☆ A new test method to evaluate the seat back angle measurement utilizing new testing equipment
