ASTM Publishes F2194-12 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bassinets and Cradles
The ASTM F2194 – 12 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bassinets and Cradles is a recently revised safety specification published by ASTM International to address safety concerns identified with the popular juvenile products known as “bassinets” and “cradles”. Bassinets and cradles are defined in this standard as:
“[S]mall bed[s] designed exclusively to provide sleeping accommodations
for infants supported by free standing legs, a wheeled base, a rocking base, or
which can swing relative to a stationary base.”
The Challenge:
The updated standard, among other things, addresses several safety concerns raised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) with regards to bassinets and cradles, some of which were based on past recalls. Key new requirements of this revised standard include:
-
Sleep surface angle requirements for bassinets and cradles that feature a rock and/or swing mode, including a maximum allowable rock/swing angle and maximum allowable resting angle
-
Requirement for products to have a 7.5” minimum side wall height
-
Evaluation for possible head entrapment in fabric sided products
-
A new requirement that does not allow restraint systems to be present when in the product is in a bassinet or cradle mode
-
Increased font size requirements for warning labels and instructional literature
