SASO published the technical regulation for Jewelry and Decorative Accessories

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has published the technical regulation for Jewelry and Decorative Accessories.it shall be applied by 22 March 2023, Here are the highlights:

Scope

This regulation applies to jewelry and decorative accessories made of metals, plastics, glass or textiles. And precious metals, jewelry, plating and artifacts are excluded from the scope of this regulation.

General requirements

  1. The supplier shall carry out the conformity assessment procedures required in this technical regulation.
  2. The supplier shall provide information related to potential health, safety and environmental risks, in order to take preventive measures against such risks by the relevant authorities.
  3. The products shall be designed in a way that shall not violate the prevailing Islamic values and morals in the Kingdom.
  4. The metal part of the products shall not rust under normal use.
  5. Colors and dyes shall not transfer to skin and clothing under normal use.
  6. Beads and small parts shall be attached to the product so that it is difficult for children to remove them.

Technical requirements

  1. Shall comply with the technical requirements contained in the relevant standards set out in the following table:

  2. Products shall not have sharp points or sharp edges.
  3. Shall clarify the warnings related to use.
  4. Shall provide information about the method of safe storage and disposal.

Chemical requirements

  1. The products shall use non-toxic chemicals.
  2. The content of the raw materials used in the manufacture of the product of harmful heavy metals such as: lead, nickel and cadmium within the permissible limits mentioned in the following table:

    Earrings products inserted into the body
    (migration amount for a week of normal use)

    The rest of the products attached to the body
    (migration amount for a week of normal use)

    0.5 µg/cm²

  3. The raw materials used in the manufacture of the product shall not cause skin allergies.
  4. The heavy metals used in the manufacture of the product shall not be toxic.
  5. The products shall not have a taste and smell resulting from the use of chemicals.

Environmental requirements

  1. The product shall be free of toxic or hazardous substances to the environment.
  2. The products shall be designed and manufactured in a way that achieves the sustainable use of natural materials, considering the reuse or recycling of these materials and their parts.

Packaging requirements

  1. Shall wrap the products with suitable packing materials.
  2. The products shall be assembled and packaged in a safe and right way during storage and transportation, in accordance with the requirements stipulated in the relevant standards.
  3. The used packaging materials shall be free of lead or any heavy metals.
